The Allegheny Student Government kicked off the spring semester by quickly resuming business and announcing the hiring of a new sustainability manager for the college.
Reports
Director of Finance Dominic Juliana, ’26, reported that the Finance Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays in the ASG office on the third floor of the Henderson Campus Center this semester. Juliana also reported that the finance request form for clubs and organizations has been re-opened after it was closed for winter break. The three finance requests this week totaled $722 from the general fund.
Director of Communication and Press Jake Slater, ’26, announced that equipment for live streaming ASG’s weekly general assembly meetings will likely arrive in the next week.
Director of Sustainability and Environmental Affairs Aidan McGrory, ’26, announced the search for a new Sustainability Manager has reached its end and that the new appointee, Madeline Yeatts, will start in her new role on Feb. 2. Yeatts has previously worked as a sustainability analyst at Ohio University and for the past two years has served as sustainability coordinator for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Attorney General Anna Kohler, ’26, gave the senate an update on the outlook of the spring semester and reminded everyone that ASG elections will arrive sooner than people will think. An interest meeting for those interested in running for president and vice president will be held next month.
Vice President Doug Malcolm, ’26, informed the senate of continued work with athletics on coordinating events. He also reported that televisions in McKinley’s Food Court will begin to display athletics events in the next week.
Executive Reports
After remarks, Malcolm noted that he was pleased with the progress of the cabinet just over halfway into the year.
“I think it (the year) has gone pretty smoothly overall,” Malcolm said. “I think we’ve accomplished the things we set out to accomplish in the first semester. Going forwards, just keeping the government that we have created this last semester, keeping going forward and really pushing that engagement throughout the campus and continuing doing the good stuff we’ve been doing: getting good feedback, voicing the students’ needs and what they know they want.”
President Chezka Quinola, ’27, reported to the cabinet that she and Malcolm had presented the Allegheny Experience committee with responses thus far received from ‘Why Allegheny?’ survey data. The survey will remain open to the end of the semester, with the intention of improving student retention.
New business
After cabinet reports, ASG moved onto its only piece of new business: the first stage of ratification for the Big Brothers Big Sisters at Allegheny College (BBBSAC) led by club president Montserrat Leal, ’27. This club is a chapter of the national organization and specifically the organization’s Northwest Pennsylvania office. The overall goal of the organization is mentorship programs between college students and upcoming students from local school districts. BBBSAC passed the first of two voting stages unanimously.
The next meeting of ASG will be held on Jan. 20 in room 301/302 of the Campus Center.
