If there is a floral scent taking over Meadville, chances are it is coming from the newest flower shop in town, Lola’s Place.
The shop, located at 928 Park Ave., opened its doors on Feb. 11, just in time for Valentine’s Day — which was a great success according to the owner, Emily Wenko.
Having just graduated last May from the University of Pittsburgh with degrees in women’s studies and communication science disorders, Wenko described herself as a “super floral person” and explained that it was one of the reasons she opened the shop.
“I didn’t want to work in an office setting,” Wenko said. “I’m a super creative person and it just wasn’t for me. I’ve always really, really wanted my own business, a flower shop. It was somehow the right time.”
Wenko’s business started in her parent’s garage in the Conneaut Lake area as a pop-up bloom bar where she would host fun events for her clients. Now she feels lucky she has a new establishment to cultivate her flowers and spread happiness.
Lola’s Place is a full-service florist and gift boutique. Anyone can go looking for weddings, funerals, birthdays, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day arrangements, as well as standard and custom bouquets. The shop also has other products, like candles. According to Wenko, people are always looking at the flowers and walking in to smell the candles.
“We have a bunch of other handmakers stuff in here,” Wenko said. “It’s a space that can be used by other makers to hold their products and stuff, because it’s not always easy as a starting-out small business to have a place to sell your things.”
The prices span a wide range, with vase arrangements starting at $50 and going up to $150 and wrap bouquets starting at $40 and going up to $100. One interesting option from the shop’s website for the readers in town is the Book Bouquet, which is a bouquet with a book in the center; the buyer can indicate the preferred genre, but the book is a surprise. It also comes with a bookmark and stickers.
The name of the shop comes from Wenko’s soul dog, Lola. For Wenko, Lola is a pocket of sunshine in the world, and Wenko said that is what she wants Lola’s Place to be for its customers: sunny and bright.
“The goal of Lola’s place is to always be like a safe place for everyone to come all the time,” Wenko said.
Wenko wants her flower shop to be part of the community. To do that, she will host workshops and events.
Wenko is excited about the future of Lola’s Place. Those interested in upcoming events should visit the store’s website.
Wenko also issued a reminder that Lola’s Place will be open during Allegheny’s graduation season, with bouquets and other items available as gifts for Gator graduates.
