Unfinished Business
Allegheny College Socialists passed the second round of voting unanimously and was ratified without discussion. The club was represented by President Zoe Williams, ’29, Vice President Leia Leviathan, ’29, Treasurer Nathan George, ’29, and Secretary Nyomi Longhi, ’29.
“Very excited to get the ball rolling, we’re thinking bi-weekly meetings, we obviously want an open, communicative space,” Leviathan told The Campus after the GA. “We’ll have topics of discussion but also, you know, we want it to be fun. Political activity can be really scary and kind of overwhelming so you know.”
Leviathan discussed future plans for events, remarking that crafts would be a target as “the act of creation is an important part of a strong, functional community.”
During the GA, the Allegheny College Socialists passed out a zine advertising the club and describing what to expect during meetings, events the club hopes to hold and how to get in contact with the club.
The BSU passed the first round of voting unanimously and was ratified without discussion. BSU represents the merger of five organizations: Advancement of Black Culture, Men of Color Association, African Student Association, Black Girl Magic and Association of Caribbean Students. BSU was represented at the GA by President Amberlyn Escobar, ’27, and Vice President Javier Jones, ’26.
“I felt it was necessary,” Jones told The Campus about why the organizations were merging. “Retention has been a really big issue for the clubs in the past so I feel as though without it, it wouldn’t have made it further this year.”
Escobar agreed and added that the merged organization should put greater responsibility for success in the hands of the members of every group. Events currently being organized by BSU for Black History Month will involve tabling in the Henderson Campus Center lobby every week to discuss the facets of Black lived experiences and cultural identity, among other topics.
Additionally, Iron Will, a prospective weightlifting club, passed the first round of voting unanimously with only brief discussion around health and safety concerns. Represented by President Carlos Klein, ’28, and Vice President Josiah Devlin, ’29, the organization hopes to foster community among gymgoers in the sport.
ASG’s next GA will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, in room 301/302 of the Henderson Campus Center.
