The Allegheny Student Government meeting on Tuesday and began with a presentation by guest speaker Director of Sustainability Kelly Boulton, ’02, who informed the assembly on the state of Allegheny’s sustainability and carbon neutrality efforts.
Guest Speaker
Boulton updated ASG with progress from 2020 onwards, reporting a 40% reduction in water and a 23% reduction in energy usage. Recently, water heaters in seven different buildings such as Baldwin Hall have been updated to incorporate energy efficient technologies, which Boulton said, combined with state financial incentives, saved enough money within the first few months of operation to offset the cost of their installation.
Boulton noted that the renovation of Reis Hall will include the introduction of heat pumps to a fifth building on campus, a heating technology upgrade which does not rely on natural gas.
The Office of Sustainability is analyzing rooftops across campus that could support new solar panel installations, which could potentially provide 30-60% of Allegheny College’s power depending on the eventual scale, Boulton said.
Due to the 119th Congress’ passage of the tax and spending cut bill on July 4, which includes rapidly removing funding for green energy incentives, the college would need to begin construction on these projects before the July 4, 2026, deadline to receive up to 40% cost rebates in incentives.
