The “Ultimate” Fundraiser

Kyle Ryan, ’26, braces for impact during a fundraiser for Ultimate Frisbee on the Gator Quad Thursday, Feb. 15.

A frigid 20-degree day was nothing to the leaders of the Ultimate Frisbee club who stood last week in the Gator Quad to raise money for the team. For $3, students were allowed to pie club members in the face from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15 and Friday, Feb. 16.
The goal was to raise funds for the club’s games, equipment and overall expenses.
“We kind of stole the idea from the other campus organizations that have done previous things, like the frats,” said Team Captain Elle Carpenter, ’25. “We put our own twist on it.”
The Ultimate Frisbee club’s roster has 43 people, with captains for the men’s team, women’s team and mixed teams.
Leadership had originally made the decision to host an event after the Allegheny Student Government lifted some of its previous restrictions on club fundraising, said Ultimate Frisbee President Michael German, ’25.
German has been president since last semester, and a part of the club since he arrived on campus.
German considered day one to be a pretty big success.
“A lot of people showed up to get punished,” German said. “A lot of the team showed up, which I’m happy about, and we had a good turnout.”
Day one of the fundraiser saw $150 donated on Venmo within the first hour. There were also alumni who contributed to the donations. By the end of the first day, the club raised about $300 and another $100 the second day.
Most of the funds raised go towards Ultimate Frisbee’s trip to the annual High Tide Ultimate Tournament, which takes place in Myrtle Beach over spring break.
ASG funds 70% of the Myrtle Beach Trip, so the club took it upon themselves to find a fun way to raise the remaining 30% of costs.
Many people are looking forward to the tournament, with the team taking a roster of 24 people to High Tide, Carpenter said. Last year, the team placed second overall at the tournament.
Given the success of the fundraiser, German said that the club would absolutely be open to more fun events in the future — though hopefully in warmer conditions.
“It’s definitely something that we can do more of,” German said.
