As part of The Campus’s 150th anniversary, The Campus will host two events next week that are open to the Allegheny and Meadville communities.
In celebration of Student Press Freedom Day, join The Campus staff for a Newsroom Open House on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The staff will offer tours of the newsroom and show visitors how we put the paper together each week before it is sent to the printing press. If you enjoy the newspaper and have always wondered how the magic happens, drop by The Campus newsroom in room 314 of the Henderson Campus Center.
“I’m really looking forward to the open house,” said Ben Stavnezer, ’27, who is a layout editor for The Campus. “It’ll be neat to give people a behind-the-scenes look at the process of layout and all the work that goes into the paper each week.”
Additionally, The Campus is hosting an all-campus reception on Thursday, Feb. 26, to celebrate the newspaper’s 150th anniversary. The reception will begin at 5 p.m. with a selection of hors d’oeuvres. Then, at 6 p.m, the keynote speaker, Anne Gearan, ’85, will give a speech titled “150 Years: The Power of Asking Questions.” Gearan is a partner at FGS Global who was formerly a White House correspondent for The Washington Post, as well as an on-air contributor for NBC News and MSNBC.
The panel following her address will feature current Editor-in-Chief of The Campus Anna Westbrook, ’26, and Michael Crowley, the faculty advisor for The Campus. Chris Potter, ’93, who is a government and accountability editor at NPR’s Pittsburgh station, will also be on the panel. The conversation, titled “Hard Deadlines, Soft Skills: Lessons Learned in The Campus Newsroom,” will be moderated by Professor Emeritus Ben Slote.
“We have an amazing set of speakers for this event,” Westbrook said. “I’m very excited to learn from them and to connect with the alumni who are attending. It has been incredibly fulfilling to celebrate such a momentous milestone for the newspaper this year, and I’ve loved all the opportunities we’ve had to share it with the broader Allegheny community.”
Alumni should register their intention to attend the all-campus celebration on Thursday by visiting alleghenycampus.com.
