Lacrosse takes home first season win

The Allegheny Women’s Lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season Saturday afternoon against Alfred University 13–11 at Robertson Field.  It only took the Gators 1:12 to get on the board and they never looked back as they jumped out to a 3–0 lead.
The Gators benefitted from the play of midfielder Meg Grossman, ’10, who tallied three goals of her own and helped the team to a 6–3 advantage at halftime.  The Gators managed to stay ahead in the second half and notch their first win of the season.
Grossman was firing on all cylinders Saturday afternoon, tallying a team–high four goals, five groundballs, and four won draw controls.
Other Gators contributed, including Kiah Voyer-Colbath, ’12, and Abby Silvester, ’11, who both had hat tricks. Caitlin Hubel, ’12, had two goals and Christina Zanic, ’10, had one goal and two assists.
“We really benefitted from the balanced attack,” said Head Coach Paula Habel. “It was nice to have everyone contributing.”
The Gators’ defense improved from last game, forcing 31 Saxon turnovers.  Additionally, Allegheny goalie Becca O’Shurak, ’11, stopped five shots.
Leading the way for Alfred was attacker Michelle Adams, who scored a game–high six goals for the Lady Saxons.
“It’s great to have a win under our belt heading into spring break,” said Grossman, who was named Allegheny’s Female Athlete of the Week for her outstanding performance.
It is still early in the season, but the ladies are optimistic about things to come.
“Although we still have a long way to go, we did show significant progress in the right direction,” said Zanic, the team captain.
This win helps the Gators’ season record improve to 1–1.
The Gators hope to carry their momentum when they travel to West Palm Beach, Florida on March 22 to take on Western Connecticut State in the Spring Fling Tournament.
