When an Allegheny student attends a sporting event on campus, he or she may not think about what it costs to operate the team playing in front of them.
In 2010-2011, the Athletic Department spent over $2.6 million running its varsity sports. This chart details the expenses of the athletic department and answers the question: Just what are we doing with all that money?
Football cost the most to operate; they spent $9,701 more than any other sport. Volleyball cost the least, with expenses totally $35,754.
For sports that are separated by gender, one side spent more than the other because of post-season expenses. The women’s soccer expenses were higher than for the men’s team. Men’s track, men’s swimming and women’s golf also spent more than their respective counterparts.
