The men’s track and field team competed in the Jim Wuske Invitational at Mt. Union College over the weekend.
Junior Bobby Over cruised to an easy first-place finish with a time of 4: 18.33. This is the second meet in two weeks that Over has claimed first place in the mile.
The second place spot was taken by Mike Vlah, ’12, who snagged more silver with his finish in the 800 meter run.
Coach Wilkerson acknowledged his team’s performance; however, he knows there is still more work to be done.
“Our distance and mid-distance group performed pretty well. On the men’s sprints side I was looking for a bit more. We had some slip-ups,” said Wilkerson.
The team will not be competing as a whole over the coming weekend. A select few will be traveling to the University of Boston to compete in the BU Valentine Invitational, a meet the Allegheny Gators attend every year.
This prestigious track event brings together not only top runners and others from the Division III level, but the best of the best from the top tier of Division I as well. Only five Gators will fl y out to Boston.
Both McLaughlin and Edwards will be compete in the 5k race with Over. Vlah will be participating in the mile race along with Throckmorton, who will carry a heavy work load with his participation in the 200 meter and long jump as well.
Over, who will compete in the 5k, insists his strength is in distance running instead of in the mile run. This is his only chance to put down a good qualifying time in the event for the national meet. He also recognizes what this trip to Boston will mean to him and his teammates.
“The saying has always been that magic happens at Boston,” Over said. “I gotta have my magical weekend.”
