If you took a step into the Wise Center on Wednesday night and looked around, you would’ve found pink bows, pink shirts, pink shoelaces and even a pink basketball. All of that pink was the result of the annual “Pink Zone” game, hosted by the women’s basketball team with the help of the men’s team and the Student Athletic Advisory Committee to support breast cancer research.
Pink Zone is part of a larger mission by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and the Kay Yow Cancer fund. Yow was the former women’s basketball coach of North Carolina State University and founder of the WBCA. She fought breast cancer for 20 years before her death in 2009.
SAAC planned various events throughout the night to raise money for the cause, and members of SAAC sold pink roses for $1 and hosted two 50/50 raffles. The women’s basketball team contributed, too, and had sold over 100 t-shirts before the game. The school also donated half of the profits made from admission sales.
After both the men and women’s game on Wednesday, SAAC raised a total of $140.75. Winnie Wong, ’12, a volleyball player and SAAC member, was impressed with the turnout.
“The attendance was the best I’ve seen for the women’s game,” said Wong. “The community and the school were really supportive in donating to a great cause.”
On the court, the Gators took down Hiram 67-55 for their fourth straight victory while the men fell 72-57.
The women are now in sole possession of second place in the conference after winning six of seven.
Freshman guard Erica Restich led the Gators with 19 points against the Terriers.
Allegheny’s free throw shooting was the key to the game, as the Gators went 27-30 from the line while the Terriers only made 16 of 21.
The win sets up a marquee matchup tomorrow at the Wise Center, as the Gators get another crack at undefeated and No. 11 ranked Denison. Allegheny’s last loss came against the Big Red 79-59.
