Students gathered on the Gator quad Saturday afternoon for the annual “Wingfest,” hosted by Gator Activities Programming. The event featured a football-themed celebration of flavor, community and competition.
“This year is a football theme,” said GAP Vice President Tommy Johnson,’26. “We thought it would be a really fun theme and haven’t done one like this in a while.”
Wingfest offered students a variety of wings to choose such as hot, barbeque, ranch and more. Attendees enjoyed lawn games like cornhole and spikeball with their peers and eagerly watched the notorious wing-eating competition.
The competition was broken into three different rounds, each with different wings.
“The competition consists of nine contestants with three participating in each round,” said GAP Co-Director of events Haven Hilton, ’28. “The first requires participants to eat 10 honey barbeque wings in two minutes, round two is eight cajun ranch wings in one minute and the third round is five hot wings in 30 seconds. Winners will receive Allegheny merch.”
One of the standout competitors this year was Patrick Sharp, ’26, who won decisively in the second round. “It’s been two years,” Sharp said. “I had to come out of retirement and show up, I had to win. Had to do it for Coach Mourer.”
Sharp’s strategy was simple but highly effective. “Put the entire wing in your mouth and get all the meat at once,” he said. For future participants Sharp advises to “drink water to avoid choking,’ and “be in the zone, be in the game.”
Nicholas Ingerson-Meacham, ’25, had a dominant performance in the first round. “I’ve been eating wings my whole life,” Ingerson said. “I knew I was going to win.” His tip for aspiring competitors is to “master the flats technique.”
Aside from friendly competition, Wingfest is a space for students to relax and connect. Logan Lee, GAP president, ’26, noted the event’s meaning. “It went well,” Lee said. “Hopefully we can have more events similar to this on campus to foster more relationships and community. Events like this are amazing for building camaraderie, friendships and campus wellbeing.”
