The Major Events Committee revealed Thursday that Mac Miller would be Allegheny’s major concert for the spring semester.
The decision came from a survey, released in November, asking students to rank their five favorite bands from a list of 23.
Some students expressed frustration with the process on the major concert’s Facebook page.
“Demanding that the survey results be released, un-tampered with,” posted Douglas Nestor, ’14.
Nestor stressed that he wasn’t accusing the MEC of anything illicit.
“I’m sure you guys have nothing to hide,” Nestor posted. “I just feel like so much of this is done behind closed doors, it’d be nice to get a look at things.”
Sophomore Craig Hayes echoed Nestor’s sentiment.
“I still think in the spirit of transparency, the entire results of the survey should be released,” he posted soon after Nestor’s original comment.
Though the back and forth eventually veered into discussing the viability of bringing Michael Jackson’s corpse to campus, the desire to see the results remained. So the Campus obtained the results from MEC co-director Natalie Curtis, ’12, which are displayed below:
Jason DeRulo actually edged Mac Miller out in total votes by 10. When average preference was taken into account, Miller came out ahead. Miller handily took the most first preference votes with 195, 78 more than his closest competitors.

The weighting system is also severely flawed. There were a total of 5,875 votes cast. Before the “weighting,” 5,447 of those votes were NOT for Mac Miller. The “weighting” gives preference and more weight to those that voted for Mac Miller at any preference level and takes away weight from those who didn’t select one of the top vote getters but instead chose a selection of all outliers. For example, if I chose Three 6 Mafia, Big Boi, and Shiny Toy Guns as my 3 and only preferences, then my votes is essentially wasted. It doesn’t take into account the idea that I might vehemently oppose Mac Miller and instead prefer Jason Derulo. This is also an example of the flaw in having 23 different artists/bands to select from. It severely splits the vote and hinders an accurate representation of the campus community’s true preference.

I just thought it’s worthy to point out that according to this data, 84% of students voting did NOT choose Mac Miller as their first choice. Furthermore, Mac Miller received only 7.3% of ALL total votes before weighting.
