Edited at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 to include comments from Chase Stelzer, ’12.
The Board of Trustees voted Saturday to allow the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity to establish a colony on campus.
The vote came as a surprise to many members of the Interfraternity Council, who thought the issue was resolved last year, when the IFC voted against allowing FIJI to return to Allegheny.
“I thought it was over with,” said Nate Summers, ’12, an IFC delegate for Sigma Alpha Epsilon. “I thought that after two years of getting the same answer, it would probably be a non-issue.”
IFC members knew that IFC president Cory Muscara, ’12, a brother of Phi Kappa Psi, would be making a presentation about FIJI for the Board of Trustees at their meeting this past weekend.
They did not know that the Board of Trustees would call a vote.
“We were very surprised,” said Sam Moritz, ’12, president of Phi Delta Theta. “We knew there was going to be a discussion about it, but we didn’t know about the vote. It sounded a little spontaneous, that it just happened like this.”
Summers noted that the Board of Trustees also voted against student opinion last year when the body approved the four-year on-campus residency requirement.
“It’s just frustrating,” Summers said. “You come into [Allegheny Student Government] and IFC thinking that the decisions you make are going to have some sort of effect. To have them reversed twice, that’s disenchanting.”
Chase Stelzer, ’12, one of the main advocates for FIJI’s recolonization, was far from disenchanted.
“We are elated,” Stelzer said in an e-mail.
FIJI is prohibited from holding official recruiting events until Feb. 1, 2012, and Stelzer said that advocates are now waiting to hear what the next step in the recolonization process will be.
He said that even FIJI advocates were unaware that the Board would call a vote.

I don’t really care if a new Frat/Sorority comes on campus or not. The people who want to join now are not those students of the past that committed such egregious acts that the fraternity was removed from campus. They (or those students) want a second shot, and I think as a liberal arts campus that is meant to be open and accepting of a variety of people, a second chance is not too much to ask. Especially when people see but do not speak of the activities some members of different fraternities/sororities engage in right now (including drug use or underage drinking, but so does the rest of the campus, it isn’t just a frat/sorority problem).
I however strongly agree with the sentiment that comes off as move that degrades the student authority on campus, and the decision to discuss this should have required voices of dissent to provide their argument to those on the Trustee Board to consider before they voted.
Craig Hayes • Nov 5, 2011 at 2:34 am
While I agree completely with your stance on second chances, I disagree on your premise that because this is a liberal arts school we should be willing to give a second chance. As a liberal arts campus that is meant to be open and accepting of a variety of people, fraternities and sororities should be banned. Many small, liberal arts schools have banned fraternities and sororities in the past few decades without much ado.
Steven Jones • Nov 9, 2011 at 11:29 pm
Hey Craig. I guess to me it is the reaction that does bug me. Just like their process of getting FIJI back in, the reaction of ‘screw FIJI, they messed up once and don’t deserve a second chance’ seems a bit hostile.
But I agree with your point about fraternities. In a perfect Allegheny, a class society would work towards charity, volunteering, social interactions, etc. in a college-wide fashion, not segregated houses of all male or all female members who have to pay to be accepted/recognized.
However, I took my previous viewpoint under the assumption we can’t get rid of them in one swoop and create a campus society based on people, not Greek letters. If the general viewpoint of the campus was to rid ourselves of them altogether, I’d say yes. But we study an affluent private college well immersed in all levels (including Trustees, faculty, etc.) in the Fraternity/Sorority society. It is going to be another generation or 2 before the purpose of fraternities is seriously challenged here.
Craig Hayes • Nov 10, 2011 at 10:48 pm
Fair points all around. And if we are going to operate in the current climate at least for the immediate future, then I completely agree.
Student • Oct 20, 2011 at 8:30 pm
Seriously guys. Stop worrying about FIJI and worry about your respective frats. If you guys are worried about dwindling pledge numbers I would take a long look in the mirror and recognize what the rest of campus really thinks about Allegheny’s frats in the first place; would be more constructive than moaning and groaning like a bunch of spoiled brats.
Greek Member • Oct 25, 2011 at 1:39 pm
It’s unfair to make broad claims about what the campus things of Fraternities on campus… Not everyone would agree with you on your opinion. Once unaffiliated members get a higher average GPA, community servie hours and total Philanthropy donations you can make claims that we are spoiled brats.
guest • Oct 20, 2011 at 6:07 pm
If you are at all surprised by this, then you obviously haven’t learned very much from your liberal arts education. One of the most popular themes at Allegheny is thinking critically, and I think we have here a classic misunderstanding about our roles on campus, and a failure of judgement. That is, namely that you believe ASG has any sort of real power.
I suggest that you [Greek Community] come together and find a way to accept FIJI. Most importantly, I’m speaking to you Fraternities. Competition is healthy, but it is also distracting. DO NOT let this distract you from your missions, which all of you know, I’m assuming by heart. Step up your game, if you are worried about dwindling numbers, revise your rush programs. You are men, you can solve these problems, which are extremely minuscule in comparison to what lies beyond Meadville’s borders.
I do not dwindle in conspiracy, even if it is the truth that there are FIJI’s on the board of directors or relatives of FIJI’s, so be it. And anyways, what would it matter to me, hypothetically, if I were on The Board that my cousin was a FIJI…?? Their duty is to provide for the wellbeing of ALLEGHENY, not their cousins interests. The Board made a logical decision. Precedent says that other Fraternities have been allowed to come back, why not FIJI? The only logical argument that I heard was that numbers were already dwindling, and FIJI would draw on those numbers and make a bad situation worse, to which I heard, football fraternity football fraternity. You are all thinking it.
Don’t lie.
If I can assure you of one thing, be it this. Do not worry about FIJI’s conduct. They are going to be under very strict watch during the first few years. If they so much as to make a peep of trouble it’ll be hell to pay. And they’re alumni will come down with vengeance after working so hard to restore there name.
You should not look at this decision and wonder what happened, but look forward and think about what you can do to make your community better. AKA you should realize that YOUR FRATERNITY could be “voted off” in a matter of a day if a vote was so called. Do not fool yourselves, you are not needed at Allegheny as you all talk about each Monday in chapter and behind closed doors. While we would like to think our organizations are a necessity, that is false. You provide very minimal value added to Allegheny, something they’d be very willing to scrape off if a new prospect came around. To that argument, I would say take a look at Allegheny’s balance sheet, think you’ll see a big dedication to Greek Life in the assets column? Cause the bottom line is what matters. Even more so you off campus Fraternities should realize that. AKA they make no money from that.
This is definitely going to be a challenge for the community, but you are not stupid people, and this is not the end of the world. If you can look back and say that the worst thing that happened during your 4 years was that FIJI came back, then who really cares? You’re still graduating from one of the best liberal arts college’s around, and you most likely had an awesome time.
Colin Soleim • Oct 20, 2011 at 10:29 pm
I think this is an excellent point from a different side than perhaps we are used to hearing about FIJI’s. To further discuss your initial about ASG and IFC lacking any real power, I think we can only blame ourselves as students.
We expect our organizations to have power when all we do is make a suggestion to the board of trustees. It seems to me that two important factors are taken into account when decisions about this campus are made.
The first is how much money/funding is backing up a particular opinion about an issue. The trustees use this to their advantage, and that is their right as people who provide a lot of financial services to our college.
Another factor is simply the number of people who support or oppose an issue. As students, we rarely (if ever) use this, but it is our main point of leverage. We outnumber the trustees, the administration, the faculty, and many other groups and yet we never seem to protest in numbers about issues we are allegedly passionate about.
ASG and IFC have power, and that power lies in their ability to assemble students at this school. The trustees can turn down our recommendation, but they can’t turn down 100 students who have gathered to share their opinion on an issue.
Before another policy overrides student opinion, let’s consider actually voicing those opinions rather than r”ecommending” them.
intriguedreader • Apr 27, 2013 at 11:35 am
ASG and IFC are figure heads the school designed so that the students feel empowered. All power is held by the elite administration. Department heads do not even decide on who will be given job offers the elite administration does.
guest • Oct 21, 2011 at 7:45 pm
The question is not whether the board had the legal precedent to hold a vote under the cover of darkness to make this decision. I’m sure the bylaws allow it, since, especially in higher ed communities whose members are immature young adults, the board must be allowed to go against the public’s wishes in order to serve its best interest. What is truly frightening is that the board is clearly abusing its power to advance its own collective interests under the guise of public service–the main point of your post seems to be you think you are doing what’s best for us. To add insult to injury, you, a member of this committee, have the audacity to seek out a public forum where students are venting their concerns and anonymously post a condescending (and almost incoherent) manifesto on greek life and authority. I am allowed to post anonymously. You, a leader who technically can be held accountable, are not.And no, I am not a member of greek life, despite your assumptions. I am a concerned alumnus who is ashamed that this decision was made. I was never a fan of greek life, though I had many friends within it, and to me the FIJI’s represented the worst of the worst. When I heard of this decision I immediately removed Allegheny from my education history on facebook. Will this decision ruin Allegheny immediately? No. And to be honest there is a little bit of a conspiracy going on within greek life–the other frats are scared you’ll take members away. But for those who care about something more than pledges, for those who care about how small groups influence the culture and reputation of their larger communities, the FIJI’s DID do something SO HORRIFIC that they were made homeless and expelled, and their disgraceful legacy has remained the talk of the town FOR DECADES. The crime was so horrible that the school essentially burned the files in the boiler room to prevent them from ever surfacing again. As such, no one but those who were there can say for sure the nature of the crime. As far as I know, the other fraternities were kicked off for minor (low enrollment) to moderate (hazing) infractions, not rape or murder, whichever it was. And that is the difference. To invite FIJI back on to campus while their reputation is still surrounded by the word “rape” is asking for trouble. And your assurance that they “will be closely watched” doesn’t do much for me, since it is you who is doing the watching. Those who join will, no doubt, have heard the rumors, but see no problem with being associated with rape and join up anyways. Do you see my angle here? It’s just going to perpetuate the same culture of hyper masculine, get rich or die trying bufoonery that got you kicked off in the first place. And even if it doesn’t end in another crime, the flavor of the community is going to change. I could barely stop myself from transferring when “faggot” was painted on someone’s door last year, and I was a senior! I care that much! And I’m sure that you, a board member, know all about Allegheny’s history. You probably know that a number of years ago this institution was teetering on the edge of disaster. The culprit was an reckless board and administration that, besides being downright stupid, abused their power to serve their own interests instead of the community’s, and the place came close to bankruptcy. Someone got smart, don’t know who, and brought in Richard Cook, Scott Friedhoff, and Dave Mclnally who singlehandedly dredged this shit hole up from the bottom of the sea. I dearly hope history isn’t being repeated
CurrentGreek • Oct 26, 2011 at 4:00 pm
The bottom line is no one really knows why they were kicked off. It’s not like this campus doesn’t circulate rumors or anything… HA! Lets be serious the reason they got kicked off could have been severely warped by 15 yrs of someone who heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from… blah blah blah. The brothers I have spoken with were on campus when they got kicked off and they cite the same minor infractions that other fraternities have been kicked off for: underage drinking, hazing, and pledging kids under a designated GPA.
Moreover, if a rape really happened do you really think you couldn’t find it anywhere with the internet access we have today?! The school can do whatever it wants to hide the paperwork but do you really think the Meadville Tribune would over look that?
aRealist • Oct 20, 2011 at 5:39 pm
That is very disheartening – especially under the pretense of their past history. Stinks for the Fiji alum that this still won’t wipe the shame of rape from their crest…but oh well, at least they wont feel like complete outcasts during Reunion Weekend now.

Is anyone really surprised by this? Administration does this to the students all the time and Nate sums it up pretty well.
We may not always see the big pictures as the admin does, but they could honest with us and tell the students more of what’s going on instead of these superficial votes either in ASG or IFC. Let’s be real, there was probably a lot of money behind this coming back to campus so Allegheny didn’t care what the students thought.
McClure • Oct 20, 2011 at 1:41 am
Dear Fellow Gators:
As a recent alum, and member of Greek life, I’ve long heard about the possible return of Phi Gamma Delta. For those of you who are ‘surprised’ by the actions of the board of trustees, you shouldn’t be. An interesting investigation (*cough *cough, Campus Newspaper) would look into the college careers of the members of the Board of Trustees and their spouses (a quick perusing of the Kaldron should suffice). I’ve heard, but never personally confirmed, that several current board members have direct ties to Phi Gamma Delta (as in they or their spouses were members), so that is why I am not at all surprised by this verdict.
So look into it. Do some extra homework. And don’t be content to take the decisions of those in power without at least questioning their motivations.
Good luck!
intriguedreader • Apr 27, 2013 at 11:35 am
Also it should note that the vast majority of the board are members of greek organizations.
Anonymousdude98 • Oct 20, 2011 at 12:20 am
