The Allegheny Student Government heard from guest speakers from the Office of Sustainability and ratified the First Responder’s Club at their General Assembly on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
Guest speakers
Director of Sustainability Kelly Boulton, ’02, and Sustainability Coordinator Kurt Hatcher, ’07, were both present as guest speakers from the Office of Sustainability. Their presentation centered around how past efforts and collaborations with ASG have improved sustainability on campus.
They specifically named efforts related to energy efficiency and reducing waste.
Boulton and Hatcher said goals for the future are to renovate current facilities in a sustainable manner and to further engage with and utilize the “Carrden” — the garden outside Carr Hall — as a potential carbon offset for the college’s operations. When responding to questions regarding McKinley’s Dining Hall’s recent transition to reusable bowls and plates, Boulton and Hatcher responded that while the reusable dishes and the green box program were both improvements in mitigating the college’s environmental impact, some issues are still being worked out for the future.
