The Allegheny Student Government General Assembly meeting concluded on Tuesday, Sept. 24, after a series of votes regarding a new ASG constitutional amendment and a new club.
New Business
An amendment to the ASG Constitution to add language and a specific process for students to be added to college committees passed the first of two rounds of votes. The committees in question are run by the college — not ASG — and include faculty and student representatives to discuss issues such as curriculum, academic standards and community standards. ASG President Ella DeRose, ’27, said that students interested in serving on one of the committees should contact ASG.
“We appreciate…students provide valuable input to committees,” said Dean of Student Life and ASG Advisor Trae Yeckley. “And this is a step in the right direction.”
Additionally, a new club passed the first of the two required votes. The Hidden Opponent is a club representing a third party non-profit organization that seeks to provide access resources to combat and destigmatize mental health issues potentially faced by athletes.
Guest Speaker
Yeckley addressed the student government as a guest speaker, advising senators and committee chairs on rules of action for motions. Yeckley also reminded representatives of their intended role as beacons of community and said that as a part of their critical role on campus, they are to hold themselves to high standards in conduct and action. Yeckley added that ASG will be participating in the process of potential revisions to the student code of conduct, which occurs every few years.
Reports
Director of Treasury Tyler Ziggas, ’25, reported that 12 of 18 budget requests were approved by the Finance Committee, noting that the remaining third were denied entirely due to formatting errors.
During her report, Co-Director of Student Affairs Kyra Jordan, ’25, talked about progress on dining. She said that Dining Committee meetings are in progress and that the committee directors have meetings scheduled with Parkhurst representatives.
Director of Sustainability and Environmental Affairs Aidan McGrory, ’26, announced that an event dedicated to community outreach will be hosted by ASG at Grounds for Change sometime in the future; the event is still in its planning stages. McGrory also said that all “green” clubs on campus will be hosting a joint event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 27, in front of Brooks Hall. The event will feature an open microphone to allow students to discuss their environmental concerns on campus.
Class Senate reports were given on each committee’s work. Class of 2025 did not have anyone present to give a report. Class of 2026 is looking to finalize a Halloween costume event at Grounds for Change. Class of 2026 also announced that it will hold a joint meeting with Class of 2025 with the Third- and Fourth-year Class Dean Carene Shipley. Class of 2027 will be tabling in the Henderson Campus Center on Friday, Oct. 4, to make smiles for World Smile Day.
DeRose announced that Gator Hub — the platform that will be replacing Engage — and ASG’s associated page will be going live next month. Additionally, DeRose pointed out that two first-year and three fourth-year senator seats are vacant; she encouraged interested parties to contact an ASG representative.
ASG’s next General Assembly is set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in room 301/302 of the Campus Center.
