As finals approach and temperatures rise, one thing is in the forecast for the Allegheny community: Springfest. Allegheny’s Major Events Committee announced on March 21 that Flo Milli will be headlining this year’s Springfest concert with NLE Choppa as the opener.
The concert is set to take place on Saturday, April 13 in the Mullen Performance Area of the Wise Center.
Clubs like WARC 90.3, Allegheny’s student-run radio station, are helping students get excited about the concert. WARC’s Director of Public Relations Elle Carpenter, ’25, was tasked with creating a playlist of the performers’ hit songs and student favorites.
“I feel like most of the students I’ve talked to on campus know of and know a couple key songs, but don’t really know a ton about the artist discography-wise,” Carpenter said. “I thought it would be a good idea to just put together some playlist of recent set lists of them.”
In addition to compiling the artists’ recent set lists, Carpenter polled students and researched Flo Milli and NLE Choppa’s top songs on Spotify to optimize the playlist.
“We did a poll on our Instagram story of songs that people wanted to hear, and added that to that (the playlist) as well,” Carpenter said.
Carpenter utilized both her role as WARC PR chair and incoming vice president of Gator Activities Programming to build hype prior to Springfest. In addition to creating a playlist for the major concert, she was tasked with creating playlists for the “Barbie” and “Ken” -themed Springfest days.
“I feel like GAP is— it’s an institution within its own,” Carpenter said. “I thought that if we were to make a playlist for them — because that’s not something they normally do — that would be great.”
As for WARC’s involvement during the actual concert, Carpenter explained that access to the artists is limited, and that WARC may not be able to interact with the artists in the way they’d like. The situation is complicated by the celebrity status of the artists: Flo Milli has over 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify, while NLE Choppa has over 19.6 million monthly listeners.
“They have certain contracts and stuff where we can’t be as involved as we’d like to,” Carpenter said. “We put out feelers to see if they’d be willing to even say a station ID — like a ‘90.3 WARC’ — so we could use that within our automated track, but they haven’t gotten back to us yet.”
Carpenter expressed that, from her perspective, student reactions to the concert are mixed. Some students are excited for the chance to see such popular artists, while others are not as familiar with the rap genre. Whether or not students have listened to the artist beforehand, though, Carpenter is sure that the concert will be a fun experience.
“I think it’ll be a good crowd,” Carpenter said. “I think everybody across the board is really excited because they think it’ll be a really good environment just to be in, in general, because the two artists have a lot of energy onstage from what we’ve seen.”
