The weighting system is also severely flawed. There were a total of 5,875 votes cast. Before the “weighting,” 5,447 of those votes were NOT for Mac Miller. The “weighting” gives preference and more weight to those that voted for Mac Miller at any preference level and takes away weight from those who didn’t select one of the top vote getters but instead chose a selection of all outliers. For example, if I chose Three 6 Mafia, Big Boi, and Shiny Toy Guns as my 3 and only preferences, then my votes is essentially wasted. It doesn’t take into account the idea that I might vehemently oppose Mac Miller and instead prefer Jason Derulo. This is also an example of the flaw in having 23 different artists/bands to select from. It severely splits the vote and hinders an accurate representation of the campus community’s true preference.

I just thought it’s worthy to point out that according to this data, 84% of students voting did NOT choose Mac Miller as their first choice. Furthermore, Mac Miller received only 7.3% of ALL total votes before weighting.
