Imagine your girlfriend, roommate, sister, or friend telling you that she despises the way she looks, that she’s not perfect enough, and is therefore going to have 10 plastic surgery procedures performed on her at once so she can become what she sees as beautiful.
Wouldn’t you look at her like she was crazy? Spencer Pratt did when his wife, Heidi Montag, declared just that.
However, Heidi took his thoughts and concerns with a grain of salt. After all, what does it matter if your husband already thinks you’re beautiful?
On Nov. 20, 2009, Heidi went under the knife and had Dr. Frank Ryan perform those 10 plastic surgery procedures on her, including Botox, liposuction, ear pinning, and breast augmentation.
“I just wanted to feel more confident and look in the mirror and be like, ‘Whoa! That’s me!’” Montag said in a People Magazine interview in January. “The Hills” star–turned–pop–star also said that, to fulfill her dream of being a pop star, she needed these surgeries: “Obviously, looks matter; it’s a superficial industry.”
True, but Heidi, if you were able to sing, you wouldn’t need to rely on your body to sell your albums. And you’d save yourself a lot of money and a whole lot of pain.
Montag said that the pain she felt when she woke up from her operations was “like a jackhammer” and made her just want to die, which almost happened when she took Demerol. Her breathing slowed to about five breathes a minute, and she needed to rely on an oxygen mask.
But don’t worry, it was all worth it.
Montag says she’s now an “upgraded” version of herself, and the world is now going to see the “real [Heidi].”
Ironic, since the “real” Heidi is made of plastic.
Despite what she says about being okay and happy with surgery she seems to know, at some level, that she’s being ridiculous –– she didn’t tell her family she was getting surgery, and instead told them she had been sick. When she did show her mother, Montag said she was looked at like a zoo animal.
It makes me feel bad for Montag; she’s so insecure she has to change virtually everything about herself just so she can look in a mirror and be happy. And now everyone around her isn’t happy.
Spencer said he was scared for her in surgery, and that she was out of control with her surgeries. The poor girl just can’t make everyone happy. I wish she could be happy enough with herself to just do what she loves, regardless of what she looks like doing so.
It’s even more ridiculous, because Heidi wasn’t even unattractive to begin with! Sure, she may not be everyone’s definition of beauty, but she was by no means an ugly duckling.
Almost dying should never be worth selling albums, regardless of how inferior you feel. It would be nice to see someone try to be a role model, and embrace their natural beauty despite the superficiality of the music industry. It’s sad, because by succumbing to the pressures she feels Heidi’s only fueling the superficial industry she’s becoming a part of.
Or maybe she’s only trying to live up to her album title: “Superficial.”
