The comments on here are laughable and the article clearly has some mistakes like the compound derived from LSD and hashish. I would like to add that drugs like these are not particularly anti-social or anti-community. The hate that I am seeing displayed here might be merited if these kids were importing Turkish heroin or the local Meadville meth but come on people its ecstasy, a drug originally used by the psych community for its amazing healing abilities in patients with PTSD not some soul sucking demon powder from far away lands. Now I am not saying what they did isn’t A: illegal and B: irresponsible, what I am saying is that maybe just like many of us at one time or another they messed up, I think they are in enough legal trouble as it is, how about a little community support for them.

Why shouldn’t the sigs suffer repercussions? Why should the sigs or any frat get their own house at all when they have demonstrated they have much higher drug and alcohol, as well as sexual assault related incidents than any other group on campus? Greek life is by far the most insidious institution in higher education, and while these two kids may not represent all Greek life, the frat should absolutely be held accountable. How can you justify giving frat members special treatment (on & off campus housing) that is denied to other students when within those houses crimes of this nature are occurring?

All you people are bickering about the trivial facts, but the fact is that this unfortunate event happened and we all need to deal with that.

I’m just curious as to why you believe the entire fraternity doesn’t deserve a house that is owned by the fraternity. It has almost nothing to do with the school what so ever. Is your point that the SAEs should be punished because of where Gavin and Jacob happened to live? It’s rather clear from the article that the so called package was delivered to an off campus house that was not the SAE house. I’m just confused as to why you believe the fraternity deserves to be kicked out of a house they own. If say the ABC house had a member in it that was caught with drugs, or any illegal item should all members of ABC be punished and there club disbanded?

      1. It is “fraternity,” not “frat.” Many members of the
Greek community view this as a derogatory term and I am sure that if a member
of Greek life used a term you viewed as derogatory to refer to you, it would
      inevitably cause an uproar.

      2. I hope you’re not lumping the Greek organizations here into the same
category as Greek organizations at larger, non-private institutions unless you
are lumping yourself into the same category as non-Greek students at such
institutions. I would suspect that there is not actually a higher amount of
incidents in Greek affiliated, campus owned housing than in non-Greek campus
      owned housing.

      3. I hope you realize that the College has contracts with these national
organizations permitting such things as the brothers of SAE to live in their
off-campus house and other fraternities to make use of the buildings they
reside in that are owned by the campus.

      4. Yes, the fraternity should be held accountable. Every Greek organization has
a set of rules that outlines what you may and may not do at events or locations
associated with the fraternity. If their Risk Manager, or whatever their
equivalent may be, failed at his duty and any other brothers knew this they
will be held accountable by the College and/or SAE Nationals. The least that
will happen is that these young men will be expelled from SAE. The worst that
will happen is the College and/or SAE Nationals will revoke the chapter’s
      charter.

Katie, although I usually don’t agree with your opinions and articles, I have to say I don’t know why everybody’s getting so worked up about this piece. Yeah, there may be a few small errors but as we all see in the news, minor errors happen all the time. I applaud you for presenting this matter in an unbiased fashion and not worrying about the reputation of the men involved, as many of the people commenting are. They made a huge mistake and because the incident is made public knowledge anyway (local papers, word of mouth), there’s no reason to not include their names, as failing to do so would just propel the rumor mill even more.

Does anyone know of a fraternity that got into some sort of trouble because ALL of its members were doing something wrong or illegal? This is rarely the case, as Greek organizations usually fall into ill will because of the actions of a few members that reflect the culture within an organization. I have witnessed chapters leaving campus for much less than what has happened here, and it has been because of the actions of a small group of individuals, that once investigated, shed light upon a larger culture of activity. From what I have heard, SAE has had multiple violations in the past few years alone, indicating that a culture of wrongdoing and defiance has developed. I have no doubt that there are good men in SAE that have done nothing wrong, but a strong organization must realize that the actions of even one person reflect onto your entire chapter. Allowing something like this to happen in your chapter house represents poor judgement by all parties involved.

You will all go to hell to meet satan for your inability to control your fellow peers. Just because you hate Greek life doesn’t mean this was their fault. Think about your arguments before you condemn something others have worked hard for. I personally don’t much care for greek life however that doesn’t mean I will use the misfortune of a couple individuals to try and attack something loosely related.

While we can debate about if we think Jacob and Gavin should be punished for their actions, I do not see this as the main issue at all from this article. I think it is shameful and a terrible way to represent Allegheny’s community and journalistic integrity. Aside from not having the correct facts, these are students that are part of the Allegheny community and their names shouldn’t be publicized so they are alienated by their friends here. I think they have enough to worry about, and having the entire school know is not what they need at all. Also, blaming the SAEs as an organization is an unfair representation of this event since this happened on an individual basis.

Also, SO many Allegheny students do illegal activities, and I am surprised students don’t get caught more often. So anyone who deals drugs or you know someone who does in your school organization, think twice before you pass judgement onto Jacob and Gavin and SAE.

The article never blames the SAE’s (assuming of course you actually read it), nor actually passes any judgement. It mention’s the students being members of SAE house, and reports comments from a couple of those affiliated with the frat. It never makes any accusation that SAE is more involved, that is your own conjecture. Surprisingly enough, Katie reports in this without any bias in the writing – how you interpret and judge the circumstances based on the report is up to you.

I didn’t say Katie blamed SAE. Reading some of the comments gave me the impression that some students are targeting this fraternity, but I could be wrong. So I was speaking to the general Allegheny community. And I did read the article, so I don’t need to be informed again about the facts. And I never said Katie reported bias, but having incorrect facts is not the best way to go about becoming a journalist. I said this article could still be published without their names….and it would still have the same factual information.

Don’t you want to go into journalism? The first rule is to fact check. Any future employer of yours should be embarrassed because you have the facts all wrong here. You just wanted to leak this ‘story’ before anyone else did so you could claim credit to it. However, this shouldn’t even be considered a story until you get all of your facts right. On top of the facts that No one likes you pointed out, Michael Yarnell is not class of ’13. If you had even asked him his class standing, you would know that.

The fact that you put Sigma Alpha Epsilon as a tag in this story is disgusting. Just like Michael Yarnell stated, this has nothing to do with the fraternity. You are trying to make this story into something it is not. To try and skew this as a problem with the fraternity is disgraceful. An organization should not be defined by two members and one incident. It should be defined by what it stands for and how, as a whole, it reflects their ideals. This fraternity stands for so much more than this crappy article full of lies and slander.

By trying to make the administration more ‘transparent’ you are just another person adding to this rumor mill. Sure the administration should be more transparent about issues, but a poorly written, not fact checked story in the campus newspaper is how this transparency issue is going to be solved. If you were really concerned with this issue, the school, or the lack of transparency you wouldn’t write an article about it. You would go and talk to the dean of students or provost about how to solve this problem rather than just perpetuate it.

No one would want a story leaked about themselves, especially one that has not been fact checked. Don’t ruin these kids’, fraternity’s, or school’s reputation based off of something you heard rumors about this past week and did a half ass job of reporting.

Well since MDMA was delivered to a house owned by the Sigma Alpha Epsilon shows that it does indeed have something to do with the fraternity. That chapter should not have allowed their members to be involved in such activity. The campus should take action against them, if nothing else, to preserve the reputation of the other Greek organizations on campus

But when a member’s behavior contradicts that organization’s ideals, it becomes an organizational problem. SAE allowed their members to engage in questionable activities. That is what has tarnished their reputation. Not this “crappy” article.

A=I am honestly becoming embarrassed by the way students as a whole have responded to both incidents, mostly because they act as if publishing their own far-biased opinion makes any difference aside from causing more drama. I am working on the assumption that the details in the article are true.
Why?–Because it’d be ridiculous for anyone to risk a libel lawsuit to publish this otherwise. Perhaps the year that so-and-so is (was?) expected to graduate is wrong; so what?–That’s not the sort of thing that’d be as extensively fact-checked.

Given the (reasonable) assumption that the main details of the story are true, it’s perhaps worth pointing out that any local newspaper’s police blotter would carry this story, albeit in a bit less detail. In fact, I am quite sure that the Meadville Tribune will carry it; so if anyone is interested in fact-checking, that’d be the place to go. But it’s probably not worth your time. I suspect you’ll find exactly the same thing there.

In any case, this is publicly available information. It strikes me as difficult to argue that anyone’s reputation is going to be harmed by dissemination of publicly available information. It also strikes me as unlikely that that was the motive behind publishing the article.

While I understand the curiosity about this issue, it is important to remember that members of our campus community have been and will continue to be personally impacted by the incident. Drawing attention to the situation compromises not only the reputation of two of our peers, but also the reputation of an entire Greek organization who does not deserve to be defined by this isolated incident. Journalists may be charged with reporting facts and creating “transparency,” but as an Allegheny student, I wish you would be more cognizant of the way that your stories impact your school and your classmates.

The amount of falsity in this article is disgusting:
“Jacob Bonessi, ’14, and Gavin Gratson, ’15,” – Wrong. Bonessi is in the class of 15.
“Pennsylvania State Police then intercepted the delivery” – Incorrect.
“a compound derived from LSD and hashish” – Also incorrect, no LSD whatsoever was present.
” Yarnell said in an e-mail.” – Completely untrue. Please provide email documentation for this statement.
This is an embarrassment to Allegheny College and journalism everywhere. The amount of slander here is offensive and boarders on illegality. You should be ashamed to be such a poor journalist. Maybe you should have listed this as an opinion piece.

    Hey Katie,

Thanks for getting some facts out there. i for one appreciated this article as there has been much speculation floating around campus. I’m not sure what could have been misconstrued here as you seem to have sources for all your statements. Someone might just be upset because their friends got in trouble. Keep up the good work. I’ll be looking forward to seeing what happens to these two. I’m of the opinion that the punishment should be very stringent since these are schedule 1 drugs we are talking about. If they aren’t punished severely, it would really reflect poorly on Allegheny, implying that you can really do anything (including commit felonies) and not be kicked off of this campus. I’ll definitely be following this story as it develops.

It is not about the best interest of the institution, it is about people being accountable for their actions. Honestly, the school will do anything to preserve their image, they don’t care who gets walked on for it to happen. I like this article since it is trying to prevent them from sweeping a serious felony under the rug like they do with so many issues,

I’m sorry, I’m not particularly interested in saving face for the school. The best thing to do is be swift in their judiciary action once all the facts are in order. By covering this up or downplaying it you show that people are not being held accountable. Until there is actual accountability it does concern me, since I’m at this institution as well. I’m sorry that you disagree with me, but swearing at me doesn’t really help your argument, it just makes you sound angry that people are finding out what happened on our campus.

            An upperclassmanApr 26, 2013 at 2:50 am

You are laughably stupid if you think there was any chance of this being a strictly private matter. Cops showed up on campus over Springfest. Word was out in a mater of hours that someone at Sig house was caught with drugs. The Campus’s article actually greatly reduces the amount of rumors, and speculation regarding the incident (not to mention makes it a thousand times less dramatic – the version I heard was that homeland security was here because the drugs were obtained from terrorists). Honestly people should be grateful for the revelation.
Also, to inform the coddled fools who are clearly to accustomed to things being semi-private because they are affiliated with the college, in the real world peoples names are put in the paper when they cause a scandal (and in Meadville things happen so rarely that the Tribune will probably have an article on this as well, esp. since it is related to the college). Further, you complain about people “drawing attention” to it – but your angry and constant comments are doing that more than anything else. This page has been getting tons of activity – and most of it is from you. Or did you think all the people thanking the writer did so for reasons entirely exclusive of the negative comments on the page? Finally, the college’s reputation isn’t going to be damaged by people paying attention to a newspaper’s coverage of the incident – everyone already knew. The college’s reputation will be affected by how they respond.
TL;DR: You, sir, “are so ignorant it’s laughable.”

in the real world, people dont give a fuck what everyone else is doing so long as their own lives are fulfilled. the fact that you have to live through the gossip of others speaks directly to your level of insecurity.

I am also curious to see how the college handles this situation. I understand they want to keep a good reputation but I am not interested in being a part of a school who does not make students pay for their actions like committing a felony in a house associated with the school. Sorry if you think that is so immature.

the allegheny community should uphold its integrity and the integrity of its students, and absolutely hold any students responsible for dishonoring that institution accountable for their actions!

but it should not stand behind HERESAY and SPECULATION masquerading as fact and truth, and we as a community should not, like dogs, turn and attack our community members based upon such heresay! we should not hang them out to dry as if they were convicted felons, rather than co-students and friends. ms mchugh i think you put your understanding of journalistic integrity upon the chopping block by sending the names of these boys (our peers) to the gallows of public interpretation without a moment of self-criticism or hesitation! it’s like dressing a man in meat and blood before dropping him into a shark tank and feeling smug that you’ve managed to satisfy a vicious beast without you yourself being put in harm’s way. congratulations on your lack of foresight, i hope it helps you in your pursuit of SHITTY REPORTING.
